Radiologist

A radiologist is a medical doctor who must complete four years of medical residency. A radiologist specializes in interpreting diagnostic imaging tests such as X-rays, MRI, CT scans, ultrasound, and angioplasty. A radiographer is an allied health professional proficient in using the different equipment used to carry out the various tests. He also assists the radiologist in diagnosing the patient’s illness or injury. A radiologist is often confused with the radiographer.

Since radiologists diagnose serious and life-threatening ailments, it is advised to consult knowledgeable radiologists who have the experience and the expertise to ascertain that the tests are done correctly. This greatly impacts the patient’s treatment as accurate images lead to a correct diagnosis.

Scope Of Work For Radiologists

The radiologist uses various imaging techniques to identify the source of the disease within the body. For bone-related injuries like fractures, dislocations, slip discs, the radiologist carries out x-rays that determine the extent of the injury. If the patient is suffering from severe joint conditions like arthritis and rheumatism, x-rays images reveal the extent of damage to the joints.

X-rays are also used in conducting mammography. It is a process of using low-energy X-rays to examine the human breast for diagnosis and screening. The goal of mammography is the early detection of breast cancer, typically through the detection of characteristic masses or microcalcifications, commonly known as lumps. Knowledgeable radiologists put the patient at ease during this difficult procedure as they have been trained to allay the fears of patients who approach them for tests for very severe illnesses.

The Other Advanced Diagnostic Tools Used by Radiologists Are

Ultrasound

An imaging method uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of structures within the body. The images can provide valuable information for diagnosing and treating various diseases and conditions. Pregnant women most extensively use it to monitor the development of the fetus.

Computed tomography (CT)

A diagnostic imaging test creates detailed images of internal organs, bones, soft tissues, and blood vessels. Knowledgeable radiologists best do this test as a slight variation in the reports can change the course of treatment for the patient.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

It uses a powerful magnetic field, radio waves, and a computer to produce detailed pictures of the inside of the body. It is used to help diagnose or monitor treatment for a variety of conditions within the chest, abdomen, and pelvis

Positron emission tomography (PET)

It is an imaging test that shows the metabolic or biochemical function of the tissues and organs. The PET scan uses a radioactive drug (tracer) to show both normal and abnormal metabolic activity

The above tests must be done with a lot of precision and proper technique. Only knowledgeable radiologists can promise to deliver such technically and complex imaging examinations with accuracy.

Types Of Radiologists

Radiologists undergo training to become specialized radiologists. The specialization adds to their training and skill and makes them knowledgeable radiologists.

  • The radiologists who base their diagnosis on the medical images and then report the test findings to the doctor who had referred the patient are called diagnostic radiologists.
  • Interventionalist radiologists are qualified to perform image-based surgical procedures, for example, inserting stents in clogged arteries to facilitate blood flow.
  • Therapeutic radiologists are also called radiation oncologists. They specialize in treating cancer and other illnesses through radiation.

Conclusion

To become knowledgeable radiologists, having the necessary qualifications is not enough. You need to continually update yourself with the latest technologies and techniques to help an increasing number of patients find the correct treatment that shall expedite their recovery process.
